Go New Yorker, Go!

[Humor-Impaired America] I love the New Yorker. I love cover illustrator Barry Blitt. I love that the magazine is taking all the stereotypes the right wing has tossed at the Barack Obama campaign and kicking those lies square in the ass.

Now the Obama campaign is deeply angered and offended. How else can it feel--at least publicly? The campaign has to reach down to the dumbest of Americans who can't understand satire to save their lives. There could possibly be votes there, for god's sake.

I'd love to be in the New Yorker office today. Talk about issues flying off the news racks! Ka-ching!

What do you think of Britt's illo? (Holly Mullen)

  1. I think it will have to be explained to a lot of people what the "New Yorker" was trying to do. I don't think a lot of people get it.

  2. It's a wonder cover. Exactly how 'Great American' Sean Hannity daily describes the Obama's.

  3. Satire and irony go right over the heads of about 95% of Americans today. I thought it was great but I read on a blog today that some rightwing ranter said that it looked just like a cover the National Review would do, and as someone else said it's like Sean Hannity's dream. I can hear his nasal voice now saying how "even the Liberal New Yorker agrees with me!" Sadly, I think the satire is going to be lost. And the Obama campaign is turning out to be taking themselves waaay too seriously anyway.

  4. I dunno. I have read the NY for decades: growing up in Oklahoma it was a rare glimpse into a different reality. But this cover is pretty out there. I just don't think it is very clever. Covers like this one need some degree of "gotcha". For example, remember the cover with Obama and Clinton both in bed together, both reaching for the same phone at 3 in the morning. That cover was clever. This one is not. Tits up in the ditch.

  5. I would have to agree that this cover was awesome. Right up my alley of humour. I disagree with the statistics that the previous commenter has pulled out of their ass where he said "about 95%". I am trying to figure out what his source was.

Do 'about 95%' of Americans also believe that Steve Colbert's persona is real? I don't think so.

If you keep going around believing that the majority of people are stupid just because stupid = loud then we will never progress intellectually and will continue to pander to the lowest common denominator because we think the way that rdale does and believe that only WE are in the top 10th percentile.

Bull Crap. We are all full of awesomeness and win. If somebody doesn't get a joke, don't waste your time trying to catch them up to speed. Focus your energy on better things. Like the next Joke.
